The College plans to feature a new faculty member every Monday and Wednesday to help our community get acquainted with our new colleagues or teachers.

Please join us in welcoming Mary Tedesco-Schneck to the School of Nursing.

Title
Assistant Professor School of Nursing

Highest Degree
PhD in Education with a concentration in Higher Education Leadership; University of Maine College of Education and Human Development. My dissertation was on Factors that Influence Classroom Participation of Junior- and Senior Level Nursing Student.

Specialty/Research Area
I am a certified pediatric nurse practitioner and have practiced in a variety of settings.  Presently, my clinical practice is in Pediatric Dermatology with Janice Pelletier, MD. I have been teaching in higher education since 2003; I earned my PhD in Education with a concentration in Higher Education Leadership in May 2016. From a clinical pediatric perspective my interests include adverse childhood experiences, residence, and dermatology. From an educational perspective my interest is focused on feminist pedagogies. Lastly, across the spectrum of health care and education I am very interested in public policy and its impact on individuals, families, communities, and nations.

When did you discover a passion for your specialty?
My passion for pediatrics began when pursuing my Baccalaureate degree at Rutgers University.  I went on to become a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner and earned a Master’s of Science in Nursing at Seton Hall University. When I began teaching at Husson University in 2003 (then Husson College) I had a passion to be a partner in educating the next generation of nurses. I sought to develop active teaching strategies to engage students which sparked my interest and study of feminist pedagogies.

Why UMaine?
The University of Maine has provided me with the opportunity to blend teaching, research, and clinical practice.

What is one thing you look forward to in the coming year?
Working collaborative on a Maine Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics Healthy People 2020 Grant:  Building Intergenerational Resilience.
